Over the weekend of January 10 and January 11, Everett High School’s indoor track program made history at the MSTCA Northeast Invitational, as two standout athletes shattered long-standing school records. Seniors Kayshaun Eveillard and Lucas Nunez broke the school records in the 300 meters and the 1,000 meters, marking a milestone moment for the program.

The MSTCA Northeast Invitational, held annually and featuring top athletes from across Massachusetts, New England, and neighboring states, is known for its intense competition and fast-paced races. This helps for the Everett track athletes to not only compete in very competitive and fast pace races but also break school records on this stage speaks volumes about the program’s growth and the dedication of its runners.

Eveillard’s performance in the 300 meters was nothing short of exceptional. Breaking the 300-meter school record is a significant achievement, especially given the depth of sprint talent that Everett has produced over the years. The event requires athletes to balance sprint mechanics with lactic acid tolerance, making consistency and mental toughness just as important as speed. Eveillard’s race demonstrated both, earning him a place in school history. Last indoor track season, he has previously also broken this school record. Now, he has came off an injury to rewrite it.

“The preparation for this meet was very hard, especially coming off of a hamstring pull in December. My only goal was to recover and become better than what I was last year, which ended up paying off greatly. During the race, I realized things started to feel different. My breathing & overall movements felt more relaxed and powerful which made me realize that off season training is paying off & the record was going to fall during this race.” said Eveillard.

On the distance side, Nunez delivered a performance that highlighted years of steady improvement and discipline. Competing in the 1,000 meters with other fast runners in the northeast, he had to push himself. As the race progressed and the pace intensified, Nunez made his move, pushing through the final lap with determination and focus. His strong kick down the homestretch allowed him to finally break the school record which he has been trying to make progress since his freshman year.

“As I passed the 800 mark and saw the time I was doing the math on what i needed to finish in for the last lap and knew I could have a chance at the record so I thought to myself to give it every ounce I had to make history.” said Nunez.

For Nunez, the record-breaking run was the years of consistent training, offseason mileage, and effort. His composure and confidence, qualities that have defined his senior season. He had also previously broken the course record for cross country, so for him to come into his indoor season and break the school record is something that is extraordinary.

“This record is special to me because it’s the first one I’ve ever achieved on my own in a track event. I never thought I would be close to it a couple of years ago so it’s really a surreal feeling.” said Nunez.

The achievements of Eveillard and Nunez shows the strength and balance of Everett’s indoor track program, which continues to excel in both sprint and distance events. Their success also reflects the collective effort of the team, from coaches who design training plans to teammates who push one another during practice.

“I’d actually like to give a thanks to my coach Cimea who I’ve known since freshman year. He’s always been by my side and pushed me through the challenges to finally end up here. To add, a special thanks to my teammates who’ve helped as well especially during these times of hardship. I really couldn’t have done it without my team leading me through this time.” said Eveillard.

Beyond the records themselves, the performances served as inspiration for underclassmen athletes on the team. Both Eveillard and Nunez are the captains of the team, so for the rest of the team, they provide an example on how to be successful.

“My team and the distance coach Mr.Hahesy have helped me this season by being really supportive and always believing in me no matter what. They also cheer and support me so it does really help me prove myself and make the team proud. Breaking the school record means to me that anything is possible and if you want something bad enough you can get it.” said Nunez.

As the indoor season continues, both athletes will look to build on their momentum heading into championship meets. With confidence high and records already falling, Everett’s indoor track team appears poised for a strong remainder of the season.

“This performance motivates me to do even bigger and better things including making my record even harder to break by getting even faster by the end of the season. This also motivates me to train even harder and shock the whole league of my abilities.” said Nunez.

“To me, breaking school record is more than just a record. it’s a stepping stone i’ve put down that i’d like to think would motivate others to try and surpass it. i’ve been motivated to break school records & go beyond that. Seeing my performance from this weekend shows me that i’ve put in the work. it shows me that i really have the potential to be bigger, be more successful & go farther than my eyes have seen.” said Eveillard.

The weekend at the MSTCA Northeast Invitational will be remembered not just for the times on the clock, but for what they represent: dedication, perseverance, and a program on the rise. With Eveillard and Nunez leading the way, Everett High School’s indoor track legacy continues to grow.
