Nunez sets course record in cross country

On Sept. 10, the Everett boys’ varsity cross country team had a meet against Medford at the home course of Everett in Rivergreen. Even though Everett ended up losing by a close call by 3 points, something revolutionary happened at the course.

Senior Captain Lucas Nunez broke his previous course record by one whole minute in the 5k race at Rivergreen with a time of 16:46. He leads the boys’ cross country team as their fastest runner. His previous record on the course was a 17:46, which got broken afterwards by then-senior Slade Harding from the Malden’s boys varsity cross country team with a time of 17:02. His time at the course now allows him to take his course record back and is now only 21 seconds away from the school record for the 5k, which is 16:25.

“I am very proud of my time and me breaking the course record once again,” Nunez said. “It shows how the amount of hard work and effort I have put into running can actually lead to an amazing outcome.”

“This season starter 5k honestly gives me a lot of hope for this season,” Nunez said. “I have already broken my personal record by so much and it honestly didn’t feel as hard like it should’ve. I am very excited for this season mostly since it is my senior year, so I have one last chance to prove how good I am.”

This cross country season has many home meets coming up. This course record could be shattered once again, maybe by Nunez, or maybe by any of the other boys on Everett’s varsity boys cross country team. The future is not predictable, but this start of the season shows a lot of promise for how great the rest of the season will hopefully go.

Update: On Oct. 15, Nunez  shattered his previous record with a new time of 16:35, closing out his senior season on senior night against Somerville and going undefeated for the whole season.
